LG Genesis (U.S. Cellular) Review

Genesis LG, U.S. Cellular 's latest Android device, is a massive, horizontal flip phone and the spiritual successor to LG env touch (4 stars) on Verizon. And 'perfect for those who can not decide between a touch screen phone, mobile Sidekick-like device, or typed text. Genesis offers U.S. phone subscribers to screen and keyboard more than any other Android smartphones. And 'certainly one of the screw, even if it has an invisible touch to the smartphone Vault Top Rank.

Designs, monitors and keyboards

LG Genesis is a large and cumbersome, there is no movement when you're cramming two big screen, and a huge key on the telephone. Genesis measures 4.7 2.4 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs a heavy six ounces. You need to ask if the LG mobile phones sold by the pound. Genesis was a complex mix of opaque little 'tacky looking, shiny plastic and chrome and soft, the cover and some of the grooves, hard plastic accents around the sides. The Genesis, two screens are even bigger than the Touch env offered a few years ago: 3.6-inch capacitive touch screen at the front, and a 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen inside. That's right: Both panels support for touch, and both have 800 x 480 pixel resolution. Outer glass screen is bright, colorful, and responsive, and the ambient light sensor to keep it dark, if necessary.

Behind the lines, including the internal LCD looks good, although it is slightly smaller and has a rough coating plastic does not feel very good and smear with your finger.

The external display is large enough to comfortably type on the keyboard Swype built. But believe me: you want to turn the opening Genesis, like the keyboard to five rows of hardware QWERTY is a gem. It features large square membrane keys, which are well traveled, if not completely separated enough. Yet I could fly on this keyboard, and I enjoyed the function keys solid five-way pad and shortcut keys on the left side. The e-mails on Genesis will never be left unanswered all.Call quality, hands-free, and Apps

Genesis is a dual-band EV-DO Rev A (800/1900 MHz) Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n device. The phone connected to my WPA2 encrypted own without any problem. Voice quality was poor, with the offender that the tone too hard for the listener almost immediately shredded. There are plenty of available gain, however, and callers said it sounded good. The reception was normal.

Voice calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth headset was ($ 129, 4 stars). Voice dialing over Bluetooth works well without training. The mono speaker is loud enough, but deforms Settings at the top and hard sounds. Unlike the old enV Touch, you can use the external speaker for hands-free rather than having to flip open the phone first. Battery life was good, says Genesis, "which is" after 5 hours and 58 minutes of talk time.

There are five home screens you can slide from. The genesis of the main menu is a land of confusion because it is divided into two sections: one for stock applications and the enormous amount of bloatware pre-loaded, and at the bottom of the programs you install on the Android Market. LG preload even his own as Facebook and Twitter clients, which is worse than freedom of the originals must be LG misunderstood what consumers want here.

Android 2.2 is on board and there is no word on when we can expect an update 2.3 for Android (gingerbread). Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 1GHz QSD8650. CPU benchmark results-related has been rapid, but the graphics scores were relatively poor, and it's not a gaming phone. You get all the usual benefits Android, including GPS navigation without voice-activated, the tight integration of Microsoft Exchange, a mobile hotspot mode (with the relevant plan U.S. cellular data), and an excellent stock WebKit browser. The integrated alarm can tell you when dinner is ready. Turn it back on and the GPS locks on quickly enough to catch a taxi when you are in your house by the sea Multimedia, a camera and conclusions

Software issues aside, Genesis made a music box. A size standard 3.5mm headphone jack is located near the top of the right edge. LG launches into a pair of low price of wired stereo headphones and a 8GB microSD card to get started. But you can not swap the MicroSD card without battery assulting as the card slot is hidden. My 32GB SanDisk card worked fine, and there are also 466MB of internal memory available.

The music sounded as a whole through the Bluetooth headset Samsung HM6450 Modus ($ 99, 4 stars), and the built-in Dolby accessory will make you feel like you're dancing with the volcano. But the Genesis cut in the first half second of each song. Independent video game beautifully in full screen mode. For the Real Cinema Show, Genesis, you can prop open it and sit on the table, even if the internal display is not so great.

The 5 megapixel autofocus camera includes a single large LED flash. All test images showed a pronounced pink hue, either inside or outside in a lot of light or in low light situations. Otherwise, the images were sharp and correctly exposed. Indeed, shutter speeds were fast, but taking a picture with the flash on auto-focus and took several long seconds. The video is very well to even the film of your Carpet Crawlers little detail capturing 25 frames per second clips at 640 x 480 pixels resolution. But there is no 720p mode, which is a strange omission for an Android phone 1GHz.

If you want everything on a smartphone, the LG buys Genesis, and you can bask in the glow. But I know what I want, and the Android phone, and Genesis is not enough: it is too large, complex and irregular. Of $ 149 in advance, you can do better. Choosing our Editors' HTC will merge ($ 149, 4 stars), which is one of the big screen, much better battery life and overall function of the HTC Sense overlapping advanced UI, although not as fast as the Genesis LG and (inexplicably) still weighs more. If you do not need the keyboard, the Samsung Mesmerize (129 U.S. dollars, 4.5 stars) beats them both, and is a magnificent 4-inch AMOLED touch screen and super thin and light design.
