Design quality, connectivity, and call
I'm getting ahead of myself, let us first on the phone. The photos do not do justice. Slim, sleek and expensive-feeling, with a metal strip of aluminum on the sides, Bold 9930 is a stylish handset suitable for an executive office or conference table. It measures 4.5 by 2.6 by 0.4 inches and weighs 4.6 ounces. It is slightly wider and thinner than the previous ball, which is good because it allows a larger screen: 2.8 inches to be exact, with an ultra-sharp 640 x 480 pixels resolution.
It is still small, but sufficient resolution to make the fonts almost as accurate as what you find on an iPhone display 4 retina. It is also a capacitive touch screen and includes glass below typical RIM touchpad now. You can navigate through this thing almost as you want. (Unless you still want the wheel, unfortunately I do not think there ever comes back, for all you die-hard out there.)
The backlit QWERTY keyboard is simply fantastic. The keys are not yet separated as in a curve. But they are even greater than before, and felt well adjusted and makes the email response about that almost a pleasure, because it can be on a phone.
The 9930 is a true world phone gras is a dual-band EVDO Rev A (800/1900 MHz), EDGE quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and dual-band HSDPA (900/2100 MHz ) device, which means it can hit speeds of 3G data both here and abroad with the right data plan. You also get Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHz, and AN / Wi-Fi 5 GHz, which fit perfectly into almost any existing enterprise Wi-Fi networks The only thing 4G is missing, RIM is committed to developing LTE 4G devices, but so far the only sound we heard, it is limited to QNX-powered playbook.
A place Gras 9930 is not a clear upgrade from previous models is poor, which was mixed in my tests. The callers sounded clear and bright but a bit loud in the speaker, each syllable has a light wash of static behind her when the speaker. The callers said my voice had the same problem in the back-to-back comparison with an iPhone 4, transmissions via MIC sounded a little less clear. The reception was strong. Invite sounded clear through an era Aliph Jawbone ($ 129, 4 stars) and Nuance-powered voice dialing via Bluetooth worked perfectly without any education. The speaker was just OK, it sounded warm and reasonably enough for outdoor use, but there was some distortion at high volume. Battery life was excellent in 7 hours and 26 minutes of talk time.
User interface, email and applications
As you've probably heard, the BlackBerry OS 7 is the evolutionary upgrade, we will not see real progress on this platform to get QNX. This means using the Bold 9930 is a comforting familiarity of it, but also very frustrating. Icons of the bar for the entire base is actually the main menu partially hidden, flick up and you will see a number of lines in more than icons. You can also scroll left or right of different groups of icons, such as Favorites, or often. Everything is animated and fluid looks good, thanks to the new "Liquid Graphics," the engine, and a voice-enabled Universal Search is a welcome addition. But when you get down and start changing settings, or firing up applications, the same user interface is basically the same as before: a pop-up menu, scroll, and in particular option, and select it, as in every BlackBerry last ten years. It seems that RIM, adding more pages of rules are still fiddly sub-menus, the operating system that was too much to begin with.
On the other hand, the rule as BlackBerry messaging devices. Fats 9930 manages all types of business and personal email accounts with aplomb, with one exception: the synchronization of Microsoft Exchange Server is a problem unless you have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server in your company. Facebook and Twitter client is helpful and you can set the Bold 9930 to provide updates to the status of the universal inbox with emails and instant messages. Under the hood, real things, cooking, the processor is a single-core, 1.2 GHz processor Qualcomm Snapdragon. Almost every task I tried was made almost immediately. (BlackBerry OS 7 can not benefit from dual-core processors yet, something quickly, would have been wasted.) Bold 9930 also has an NFC chip, even though I could not find anything to test it with.
The new WebKit browser works exactly as expected. It 'pretty fast, responds immediately to scroll and pinch gestures to zoom in and the desktop in HTML format, WebKit, and WAP pages all look sharp and detailed. Finally, it is a bargain. There is no Flash support, and still no accelerometer, so you can tilt the phone to display the time, but a 2.8-inch screen does not match the 3.5-4.3-inch panels, you will find a complete touch- screen phones anyway. But at least in other respects, the browser will now have the same level as the competition, if not superior in any way.
I wish I could say the same thing about the BlackBerry App World, which is RIM's biggest problem right now. It's slow to load, difficult to navigate, and full of applications that are generally poor clumsy and not as powerful as their counterparts IOS and Android. Nothing on the BlackBerry OS 7 enhances this. Do not look too much in the way of more powerful applications for Bold 9930, either. All developers are considering taking advantage of the touch screen and faster processor will probably be strong crunch the numbers and just take it for QNX.
Multimedia, camera, and conclusions
There is a standard size of 3.5 mm headphone jack, but the microSD card slot is buried behind the battery again, which is ridiculous. My 32GB SanDisk card worked fine, and there are 8 GB internal flash storage media, but only 190 MB available for applications. At least robust RIM Desktop Software for Mac and PC Suite takes the pain out of desktop synchronization. The music sounded clear and full with Samsung Bluetooth headset HM6450 Modus ($ 99, 4 stars). The music player was responsive and showed smooth scrolling thumbnail album art. Videos in full screen video player as fluid and colorful, and self-transcoded 720p HD video on the road. But a 2:35-to-1 Iron Man 2 looked really small clips on the 2.8-inch, 4:3 aspect ratio LCD, it's really not a phone for watching movies.
The 5 megapixel autofocus camera sports a single LED flash and a 720p HD camcorder. Test photos were just average, with good detail and resolution, but the neutral colors and poor flash performance. Soft focus and a slightly reddish tint also reduces the action. Taking pictures is fun, however, because the camera takes shots and save almost immediately and the LCD viewfinder is super smooth. Registered 1280 by 720 pixels (720p) and 640 x 480 pixels (VGA) video was smooth at 30 frames per second. In each case, so that the image fine, though not pixelated, and even a little soft and pink. Turn on image stabilization helped nerves without damaging the film a lot.
All in all, the BlackBerry Bold 9930 is a stopgap release, the company stuck in neutral, and can not promise. After all this time, this phone should be running QNX, a new App store brand, and the ship charge is a slick new applications can take advantage of its features. Instead, it is still too wary to upgrade, even if the hardware specifications to jump well. Even worse, $ 249 with a two-year contract, Bold 9930 is priced properly thick highly devices, such as HTC Thunderbolt 4G ($ 249, 4 stars), charging Samsung 4G Droid ($ 299, 4 stars) and the ' Apple iPhone 16GB 4 ($ 199, 4 stars).
If you love your BlackBerry in progress, but need a new right now, or if your IT department forces at any substitutions, the Bold 9930 is sufficient. But if you were watching last Android and iPhone, or already have one, Bold 9930 is just more of the same old, same old. Do not be fooled by the revision number of the new operating system, the more CPU and capacitive touch screen. 9930 The Bold may be more attractive and more responsive than before, but the OS is basically the same and there is almost no software available to enjoy what it offers on the hardware side.
